As soon as news of Arday’s death emerged various people ran for cover. There is a story that his death was a confession. There is no truth to this and could never have been. Nowhere in academic history has anyone committed suicide over a plagiarism accusation.
What actually happened is far more serious.
Lanre Bakare contacted Jason Arday, a friend and colleague, and told him he was going to write a piece defending him. In reality Bakare was tasked with doing a hit job on Arday. Arday believing this was a friend opened up. When the hit piece appeared there was nothing, new nothing he could not answer or had not answered before. But it was the sense of betrayal by Bakare that was pushing him to the edge. He told Kehinde Andrews that he was utterly devastated by the betrayal by Bakare.
