‘Zombie’ is a complex moral concept. It conceives of a person who seeks to avoid the pain of subordination to evil by abandoning their moral nature. As long as a person maintains their moral dimension there is great pain when they do evil and know it. Many Israeli soldier have become mentally ill some committed suicide because of what they have done and the moral pain they suffer. Instead they close down their moral self and obey a power. However, in closing down their moral self they become ‘dead’. In all religious and serious moral codes a person who lacks a moral sense is DEAD. There is something fundamentally human that is missing in these persons. Westerners mischaracterised this deep insight as a form of freakish fantasy.
Many Western leaders have become ‘zombies’. They support foreign powers destroying their country’s infrastructure. Previously deeply held values are abandoned overnight… for example Britain imprisonning disabled persons as terrorists simply for holding up a banner with the words ‘Palestine ….’ Their citizens are overwhelmed with shock. A woman in a wheel chair is arrested for being a terrorist for holding a placard? But their leaders show no remorse whtsoever … as they have abandoned their moral nature and become’zombies’. You cannot argue with a zombie as you do not share a moral universe with them. By showing zombies as horrific figures the priests in the Caribbean wished to show a moral reflection of what those who have become zombies truly look like if they could see themselves in a moral mirror. Being a ‘zombie’ has nothing to do with skin colour.
Today we have a Western elite that worships power and money. This political elite says power justifies anything. Its economic elite and academic fellow travellers say money is the measure of ‘All Things’ and call this an economic theory. They have lost their moral nature and say these things without hesitation or blush. They have become zombies. You cannot argue with zombies, as you do not share a moral universe.
Some commentators say they appreciate that at least the US President tells the truth. No more obfuscation. But Trump is not telling the truth. If he were telling the truth, he would say that US policy is evil, breaks international law and has no moral justification. Instead the US President is saying there is no moral dimension because might makes right and we measure everything in money terms. Whereas before, US policy was dressed up to appear ethical, now the US President says there is no such thing as a moral dimension. There is nothing to dissimulate.
