The heart has its reasons which reason knows nothing of… Pascal (Life on the Hill -2)

Pascal

The heart has its reasons which reason knows nothing of… We know the truth not only by the reason, but by the heart’ Blaise Pascal ‘Pensee’

There are aspects of life that  as a writer I feel need sharing. Our dominant culture often makes communication difficult because it embeds assumptions that are the devil to root out. That is the basis of my series ‘Life  on the Hill’.  I take every day events but hope to shine a light upon them to help us heal our view of life.

Imagine the day: I am an undergraduate at Cambridge. I have just been introduced to a beautiful German girl from Munich, and we are walking through the City centre.  We are chatting happily seeking to learn a little about each other. She came to Cambridge to see someone else but that person is at an event  so a friend asks me to have coffee with her.

We come to the City Centre strolling past Kings College.  It is crowded as it is midday Saturday. For apparently no reason I turn to her and kiss her full on the lips. She kisses me back with some passion. There is an awkward silence then we walk on.

Later that afternoon, we are close together and there is a warmth between us. Student bedrooms make closeness inevitable. Light bounces tenderly from her skin and shadows reveal the gentle contours of her body. My hunger is not requited. Suddenly she turns to me with some aggression: ‘Why did you kiss me!’ This is not a question but almost an accusation of assault. I am stunned. We are both naked in every sense. Her eyes are penetrating my soul. Why? She wants the truth and now.

I look her directly back, a little fearful but now filled with love and answer: ‘Because you wanted me to’. Her tone changes, her body collapses  from its aggressive posture. She takes a deep breath and replies: ‘ You were not meant to know that!’
